Newspapers: Society for News Design and POYi

How many times have you heard some variation of this?

"Newspapers are a dying breed".

Well, I've heard that one for years especially when I was working for one.

Who knows what the future holds for newspapers and even with circulation dropping for many, there is still some amazing content generated and delivered by newspapers.

Two of the more prestigious visual communication contests for newspapers are the Society for News Design's Best of Newspaper Design and the Missouri School of Journalism's Pictures of the Year International.

SND just wrapped up their judging in Syracuse at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and the winners of the 29th Annual Best of Newspaper Design have been announced.

Garnering the top spots as "The World's Best-designed Newspapers:
Akzia (Moscow)
Expresso (Portugal)
Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung (Frankfurt)
The Guardian (London)

When is the last time a US paper was named World's Best Newspaper? 2006: The Hartford Courant in the 26th annual competition. And, the San Jose Mercury News and the Virginian-Pilot in the 23rd annual competition.

In Columbia, Missouri, judging for POYi began Feb. 17th and the winners are slowly being announced online. Judging for the newspaper photography categories ends tomorrow with judging for the magazine photography categories to begin on Sunday, Feb. 24th.

My favorite category is Multimedia and Editing. This is the category where all the elements come together to be judged as a whole.

Print isn't dead (yet) and great content is still there.
